Because of you…Fatimah is growing closer to God.
When Miss Tay asked the middle schoolers about their New Year’s resolutions, Fatimah said, “I want to grow closer to Jesus Christ.” Tay, who is the main teacher for Acts4Youth’s in-school classes, was stunned. She said, “This is not something kids typically share in front of the whole class.”
Although Fatimah’s family are not church goers, she has been learning what it means to be a loved child of God through a variety of connections with Acts4Youth. Miss Tay has been giving her rides to and from school every day, and these drives have given Tay an opportunity to speak into Fatimah’s life and share her own journey with Christ. Tay is helping her to see that others are going through stuff too, even teachers, and that the tough times Fatimah is experiencing can be her testimony. Tay said, “We’ve talked about how what she is going through isn’t just for her, but for someone else too. I’ve told her, ‘Your difficulties will enable you to help someone else one day.’”
Their conversation reinforced what Fatimah heard during a recent lesson from the 3D athlete component of Acts4Youth’s after-school spiritually focused Shine program. Before beginning the team athletic activity, students participate in a spiritual lesson that connects a character trait to scripture to provide a blueprint for how to live out the trait. The curriculum is based on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ program.
Toughness,” was the recent trait discussed, defined as “overcoming difficult challenges and hardships.” After discussing the story of Joseph and how he was hated by his jealous brothers, students were encouraged to:
· Recognize that storms will come
· Prepare for the storm through prayer and bible study
· Rest in Jesus during the storm, rather than try to rely on their own strength
· Let God use them after the storm
This school year, Fatimah has gone from saying she’s not sure she believes in God to becoming hungry for a relationship with him. On her own, she recently chose to fast for 5 days from sunup to sundown as a way to grow closer to God and focus on her faith. She is also planning to attend church with another Acts4Youth staff member.
God seems to be using Fatimah already. After she announced her resolution in class, another girl said, “That’s a good one. I want to grow closer to God this year too.” Then, a third girl chimed in that she wanted that too.
